01 March 2017 - What better way to start Spring that by being high in pine forest, sun beaming on me resting on this ridge-backed recumbent, reminiscent of a Stegasaurus.
I count 12 complete stones plus recumbent. Just two or three stand, the rest are there, coated in moss and lichen, asleep. Bracken folds over them like thorny blankets.
All stones could be re-erected, in this most primordial setting. It is fortunate that this high spot is beyond reach of man's demolition frenzy.
The view South is obscured by the forest plantation (how little ancient forest survives in Aberdeenshire) but the terraced position between two high peaks, commands a far view both North and South. Note - the circles are never, or rarely, on high peaks themselves. Aside from practical considerations, if there were any, such as dragging these enormous stones a further 500m of difficult terrain; they are placed on these terraces as they seem to "get" the picture perfect setting. The KNOCKOUT view and idyllic location is essential.
Extraordinary heavy metal circle near Aberdeen Dyce airport. One of the finest, most complete monuments of its kind. The growing urbanisation surrounding it cannot hold this druidic temple back.
